Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla (ex Governor of Cavite) is facing public backlash after a class suspension announcement posted on the official Facebook page of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) drew criticism for its use of humor.

The post, which addressed the suspension of classes in parts of Luzon due to inclement weather and flooding brought by the southwest monsoon, sparked controversy online for its lighthearted and seemingly joking tone. While intended to inform, many netizens found the message inappropriate given the seriousness of the situation.

Celebrities such as Jessy Mendiola questioned the tone, commenting, “Is this supposed to be funny?” Actor Jake Ejercito also expressed disappointment, saying, “There’s a time and place for trying to be funny — this isn’t one of them.”

Social media users were quick to point out that many Filipinos are currently grappling with the effects of heavy rainfall, including flooding, evacuations, and power outages. They argued that public officials should exercise greater sensitivity and professionalism in disseminating critical information during emergencies.

“As the DILG Secretary, we expect calm and serious communication. This is not the time for jokes,” one user wrote.

The incident has reignited calls for government agencies to adopt a more measured and respectful tone, especially on official communication platforms used to convey life-saving updates during times of disaster.
