Ternate, Cavite – A trainee soldier died after collapsing during a swimming lesson at a military base in Ternate, Cavite province, south of Manila, authorities said Thursday.
Joel Jimena Jr. collapsed at around 11:50 am on Wednesday during training at the Marine Barracks Gregorio Kim in Barangay Sapang I. He was rushed to San Lorenzo Ruiz Hospital in nearby Naic town, where he was declared dead by a physician the following day.
Police are investigating the cause of death. No further details were immediately available.
The incident comes as the Philippine military continues to expand its training programs amid regional security challenges.
