9 Cavite Coastal LGUs Undergo Pre-Assessment Activity for Fisheries Compliance Audit

Posted by

In a concerted effort to enhance sustainable fisheries management, nine coastal Local Government Units (LGUs) in the Province of Cavite recently participated in the pre-assessment activity of the Fisheries Compliance Audit (FishCA) from May 15 to 17, 2024, at the Microtel by Wyndham Eagle Ridge in the City of General Trias, Cavite.

The initiative was led by the Manila Bay Project Management Team in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Cavite Provincial Fisheries Office (BFAR 4A-PFO). The primary objective of this pre-assessment was to assist the LGUs in preparing their documentation for the upcoming FishCA table assessment and onsite validation scheduled for May 27 to 31, 2024.

Why FishCA Matters

FishCA plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable management of fisheries resources. By evaluating compliance with regulations, assessing fishing practices, and identifying areas for improvement, FishCA contributes to the conservation of marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishing communities.

The Participating LGUs

The nine coastal LGUs that actively engaged in the pre-assessment activity are as follows:

  1. General Trias
  2. Noveleta
  3. Rosario
  4. Tanza
  5. Naic
  6. Kawit
  7. Bacoor
  8. Cavite City
  9. Imus

Collaboration and Preparation

Representatives from each LGU worked closely with experts from BFAR 4A-PFO during the pre-assessment. They reviewed existing policies, fishing permits, catch records, and other relevant documents. Additionally, the teams discussed best practices and addressed any challenges faced by the coastal communities.

FishCA Table Assessment and Onsite Validation

Following the pre-assessment, the LGUs will undergo the FishCA table assessment and onsite validation. During this phase, auditors will evaluate the implementation of fisheries regulations, the condition of fishing vessels, and the overall compliance of LGUs with sustainable fishing practices. The results will guide future interventions and policy adjustments.

Commitment to Sustainable Fisheries

The Province of Cavite recognizes the importance of sustainable fisheries management. By actively participating in FishCA, these coastal LGUs demonstrate their commitment to preserving marine biodiversity, supporting local fisherfolk, and ensuring the long-term health of our oceans.

As the FishCA process unfolds, stakeholders eagerly await the outcomes that will shape the future of fisheries management in Cavite. With collaboration, transparency, and dedication, these LGUs aim to strike a balance between economic development and environmental conservation.
