NAIC, Cavite — This coastal town will hold its 15th Pawikan Festival on Feb. 13 at Naic Town Plaza Covered Court and the Pawikan Hatchery in Barangay Labac to promote sea turtle conservation and environmental awareness.
Organizers said the annual celebration aims to deepen public awareness about the importance of protecting sea turtles and the environment, particularly the town’s marine resources.
The event will begin with a fun run featuring students, teachers, government employees and environmental advocates. Organizers described the activity as a symbol of collective action for the environment.
A Pawikan Environmental Forum will provide information about the status of sea turtles and threats to their survival, including pollution and climate change.
The festival will include a Creative Chant Cheering Competition, where participants will demonstrate rhythm, precision and team spirit while delivering environmental messages.
A coastal cleanup drive will be held at the Pawikan Hatchery in Labac. Organizers encouraged residents to join the beach cleanup, emphasizing that every piece of plastic removed could save marine life.
Maguagi Performing Arts will provide cultural performances during the celebration. Certificates and plaques will be awarded to individuals and groups actively supporting the town’s environmental programs.
The highlight of the festival will be the release of baby sea turtles at Labac beach. Environmental advocates said only one out of every 1,000 sea turtles survives to adulthood, making each hatchling release a symbol of hope.
In celebrating its 15th year, the Pawikan Festival reinforces Naic’s message that environmental conservation is everyone’s responsibility, not just a few, organizers said.
