Residents in Ternate, Cavite Raise Fears Over Collapsed Flood-Control Structure
TERNATE, Cavite — Residents of a coastal community here are demanding answers after a section of a riprap wall, intended to protect their area from flooding, collapsed and has remained unrepaired for years.
The structure along a river in Sitio Villacarlos, Barangay Sapang Dos, was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in 2016 as part of a flood-control project. According to local accounts, the wall later developed cracks before a portion of it collapsed during the height of Typhoon Kristine.
Despite a new flood-control structure being built adjacent to the site, the collapsed section has not been fixed. The situation has left residents anxious, particularly during storms, fearing that the river will overflow and endanger lives and property.
The community group Ternate ONE said it has reached out to the DPWH Regional Office 4A via email seeking an explanation and action regarding the project. As of Thursday, the agency has not yet issued an official response.
