IMUS, Cavite — Officials and citizens gathered Wednesday to commemorate the 127th anniversary of the Battle of Alapan and National Flag Day 2025 at the National Flag Shrine in Imus Heritage Park.

The ceremony, held at the monument in Barangay Alapan 2-B, brought together representatives from various government agencies and civic organizations. Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel led the flag-raising ceremony, followed by a flag pledge administered by Acting City Tourism Officer Dr. Emanuel Paredes.

Attendees paid tribute to Filipino revolutionaries and the first unfurling of the national flag through a wreath-laying ceremony at the Inang Laya monument, which symbolizes freedom achieved through courage and patriotism.

National Youth Commission Chairman Joseph Francisco Ortega delivered an inspirational message, while Congressman Adrian Jay “AJ” C. Advincula offered remarks to attendees. National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chairman Regalado Trota Jose Jr. and Provincial Tourism Officer Head Elinia Imelda Rozelle Sanggalang, representing Gov. Athena Tolentino, also participated.

Acting Imus City Mayor Yen Saquilayan represented Mayor Alex L. Advincula at the event. Rev. Fr. Randy De Jesus of Mary Help of Christians Parish in General Trias delivered the invocation.

Claire Toledo and the ESS-South Angklung Ensemble provided musical performances. Participating organizations included the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and various youth groups.

History

The Battle of Alapan was fought on May 28, 1898, and was the first military victory of the Filipino Revolutionaries led by Emilio Aguinaldo after his return to the Philippines from Hong Kong. The battle occurred between 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., involving approximately 270 Spanish Marines.

Following the Philippine Revolutionary Army’s victory over Spanish forces, the Philippine flag was first unfurled on May 28, 1898, though it was not formally presented to the people until June 12, 1898.

The Battle of Alapan and National Flag Day are commemorated annually on May 28 to honor the bravery of Filipino revolutionaries against Spanish colonial forces and to mark the historic first display of the Philippine flag in May 1898.

The celebration marks the beginning of National Flag Days and the lead-up to Independence Day celebrations on June 12.
