Taal Volcano Shows Mild Activity; PHIVOLCS Maintains Alert Level 1

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported mild activity at Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, recording two volcanic earthquakes and low-level gas emissions.

Despite these developments, the alert level remains at 1, indicating no imminent eruption but advising residents and local authorities to remain vigilant.

According to PHIVOLCS, the volcano emitted an average of 564 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) per day as of Feb. 22, 2025. Water acidity at the Main Crater Lake was recorded at a pH of 0.3 on Feb. 19, with a maximum temperature of 71.3°C. The agency also observed a 350-meter-high steam plume drifting southwest and noted long-term deflation in the greater Taal Caldera, with short-term inflation in the southeastern portion of Taal Volcano Island.

Taal Volcano, located about 60 kilometers south of Manila, is one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes. It last erupted in January 2020, forcing mass evacuations and blanketing surrounding provinces in ash.

The province of Cavite, which lies north of Batangas, was also affected by Taal’s previous eruptions, experiencing heavy ashfall that disrupted transportation, closed schools, and affected local businesses.

Authorities in Cavite continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring preparedness in case of heightened activity.

Local officials and emergency responders continue to monitor the situation, reminding residents and tourists to avoid venturing into the volcano’s permanent danger zone.

While no immediate threats have been identified, PHIVOLCS advises caution, as Taal’s activity can change rapidly.

“We urge the public to stay informed and heed advisories from authorities,” PHIVOLCS said in its latest bulletin.

Taal’s activity is being closely monitored as part of the country’s broader disaster preparedness efforts.

The Philippine government, alongside local disaster risk management offices, is ensuring readiness should the situation escalate.
