The province of Cavite led commemorations on Friday for the 80th anniversary of the retaking of Corregidor Island, paying tribute to the soldiers who fought for the country’s liberation during World War II.
The event, held at the Pacific War Memorial on Corregidor Island, was organized by the Provincial Government of Cavite in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), and other government agencies.
Dignitaries and military officials laid wreaths in honor of fallen troops, with representatives from the US Embassy, the Philippine Navy, and the local government in attendance. Atty. Rodolfo D. Uy III, speaking on behalf of Cavite Governor Athena Bryana D. Tolentino, bared the province’s role in preserving the nation’s history and honoring its war heroes.
Cavite City Councilor Jesus Jet Barrera II, representing Mayor Denver Christopher Chua, stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom, urging Filipinos to uphold patriotism and unity.
The ceremony also included a tour of Corregidor Island, allowing visitors to gain a deeper appreciation of its historical significance.
The Cavite provincial government expressed gratitude to all participants, noting that honoring the past strengthens the nation’s commitment to democracy and peace.
