TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite — A motorcycle rider died and his passenger was critically injured when their vehicle crashed into a tree on Lapaz Road in Barangay Cabezas late Wednesday, police said.

The single-vehicle accident occurred at 9:37 p.m. on a curved section of Hugo Perez-Cabezas Road inside Lapaz Subdivision, according to the Trece Martires City Component Police Station. Police received notification of the crash at 11:55 p.m.

A Barangay Cabezas official told police the rider lost control on the curve at an undetermined speed. The motorcycle veered into a roadside gutter, throwing both riders.

The driver struck a tree and his passenger slid across the pavement, sustaining serious injuries, police said.

Both were taken to General Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital. Dr. Patrick Albert Ang pronounced the rider dead on arrival at 10 p.m. The passenger remained hospitalized Wednesday with serious injuries.

Investigators determined both the rider and passenger were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, a factor police believe may have contributed to the loss of control.

Police are preparing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.

Authorities urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

The investigation continues.
